Hayley Wakeford was awarded 2nd equal - Best Bartender in New Zealand; Beer & Brewer Magazine People's Choice Awards 2013.

Best Small Bar/Pub NZ

The tavern was also awarded 2nd Equal - Best Small bar/Pub (under 150 patrons) in New Zealand; Beer & Brewer Magazine People's Choice Awards 2013.

We have 19 taps, covering the whole spectrum of beers - from easy drinking lagers to deep, dark beers that will put hairs on your chest. There's also a couple of delicious ciders and an alcohol-free ginger beer for those who choose to abstain.

All of our regular beers and ciders are available to take home in a two litre rigger, at a very reasonable price. You can buy empty riggers from us or help the environment and bring your own!

Your hosts - Sue & Ray

After spending the last decade living around the world, Sue and Ray are the proud new owners of the Sprig & Fern, Tinakori Road. No strangers to Wellington or hospitality, they dropped by Ford’s Café in Thorndon on their return to New Zealand, only to find the Sprig & Fern Tavern in its place. After a pint and a bite to eat they were hooked and are now firmly planted behind the bar spreading the story of good craft beer.

We have a function room upstairs that is ideal for groups of ten to thirty people. Please call or email us to arrange a booking.

Gigs & events

Friday night DJs. Saturday night vinyl sessions - every Saturday night from 7pm we offer one of our regulars the opportunity to come and subject the pub to his/her music collection. Always an eclectic mix - everything from funk and soul to folk and country. Other special events include German Unity Day, St Andrews Day, mid-winter Xmas, lots of live music, comedy nights, Wellington on a Plate and Hopstock.

We consider ourselves a community orientated pub and are involved with many local teams and projects. There’s a fund raising opportunity at the quiz every Tuesday night from 7pm, supporting a different charity or good cause each month. We support Sunday league and indoor football teams, and a tennis team.. We're also part of the Wellington beer community though the Craft Beer Capital trail.

Everyone there is lovely and they know what I drink, to the point when I am being a little hard of thinking and ask for something else they look at me understandingly and pour me an IPA :-) Oh, and they sell pickled eggs - seriously, what other reason could you need!
