We’re all about genuine people, serving real craft beer in proper imperial pints.

We proudly serve the entire range of Sprig & Fern’s multiple award-winning craft beers and ciders in proper imperial pints, but that’s not the only thing that makes our Taverns a bit different.

We have no TVs, pokie machines or pool tables in our taverns, so you can enjoy good old conversation and human interaction, along with classic pub snacks and food.

It’s classic ‘Kiwi’ – egalitarian, homely and with a great sense of humour.


Sprig & Fern Taverns form part of the community, and the community forms a big part of us, so we respect that and we look after each other.

We raise funds for local charities and good causes, and help preserve our heritage by restoring older, character buildings to house our Taverns. We’re small and personal, and encourage responsible drinking.

About Sprig & Fern Taverns

An idea born out of necessity.


Way back in 2006 when we opened our first Tavern, most of the taps in virtually all of the pubs throughout New Zealand were strictly controlled by one or other of the two big breweries, and served only what some would now refer to as “bland, mainstream beer”.

Meanwhile, a craft beer revolution was underway and an increasingly large (yet still rather small) portion of the drinking public were crying out for real beer – beer with flavour!

Over at the Sprig & Fern Brewery, situated in Richmond, Nelson, we’d been busy brewing great craft beer and ciders for some years, and we needed a way to make our products available to an enthusiastic beer-loving audience.

Independently owned Taverns serving real craft beer.


This simple concept has proved very popular and there are now seven independently owned Sprig & Fern Taverns in the Nelson/Tasman region, four in Wellington, one in Christchurch and a Little Sprig in Wellington.

All of our taverns very deliberately have no TVs, pokie machines or pool tables. What they do have is a welcoming, unpretentious atmosphere, and plenty of places to relax, unwind and talk with your mates over a beer, wine or cup of coffee.

Tracy Banner

Chances are if you’ve heard of Sprig & Fern, you’ve heard of its owner and Master Brewer, Tracy Banner.

Tracy has amassed more than 35 years’ experience in the brewing industry, and has played a very significant role in the birth and rise of craft beer in New Zealand.

Tracy and her husband Ken own the Sprig & Fern Brewery, and the Upper Queen Tavern.

The Brewing Team

Collectively the brewing team has nearly sixty years brewing experience with all brewers having had life experiences in other breweries around the world. Tracy is ably assisted in the Brewing Team by Martin and Callum.

Martin is an accomplished brewer from Germany and Callum is a 6th generation brewer from the Duncan family therefore we have a formidable brewing team.
