Brightwater Sprig & Fern Tavern
The nearest pub to Lord Rutherford’s birthplace.
The Sprig & Fern Tavern on Ellis Street in Brightwater has quickly turned into a community hub as well as being a favourite local tavern serving Sprig and Fern’s craft beer range. And just around the corner, Earnest Lord Rutherford’s birthplace memorial.
Your host – Kevin Gear
One of three original owners of the Sprig & Fern in Brightwater when we opened the premises just over 10 years ago in December 2009. I have been involved in working alongside our fantastic staff providing a warm and welcome environment for all of our valued customers since we opened.
Our aim from the outset was to establish a community tavern for all to enjoy without the distraction of tv, pool tables or gaming machines. In this, we have been successful and we are proud to be part of the vibrant Brightwater community.
How to find us
Rigger sales available.
What we are about
18 taps of Craft Beer
We have 18 taps of quality, award-winning craft beer as well as a selection of wines and spirits. The freshly brewed beer and cider is made just down the road in Richmond.
About the Tavern
A Brightwater community hub, the Tavern is a place where you can stop in for a coffee with the kids during the day, relax with a beer after work, grab a meal or hold a committee meeting.
The living room-like entrance has a wood fire and armchairs. There’s a lively space down the back with a dart board and a covered outdoor area, perfect for a beer in the afternoon sun.
Supporting local community organisations, local charities, local schools, scout groups etc – We have raised over $170k for the local community over the past 10 years.
Join us from 7:30pm onwards!

Community & good causes
The Tavern is part of a small community and we like to do our bit. We get right in behind the annual Brightwater Wine & Food Festival, and we estimate that our Thursday quiz nights have generated in excess of $50,000 for local good causes in the last 5 years.
